GOALs

IT’S TIME FOR NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR PROTECTION FROM GUN VIOLENCE

IN SCHOOLS AND PLACES OF WORSHIP

On Monday, December 1, 1958, a fire broke out at Our Lady of the Angels elementary school in Chicago, Illinois. The school had an enrollment of 1600 students. A total of 92 children and 3 adults died in the fire. The disaster was the lead headline story in American, Canadian, and European newspapers. The severity of the fire shocked the nation and led to major improvements in standards for school design and national fire safety codes. Because of these standards, today’s schools are much safer. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that between 2013-2017, school fires accounted for an annual average of one death. There are standards for fire prevention, building construction, highway transportation, aviation and almost everything else where protecting lives is fundamental.

Must we wait for greater gun violence before setting standards that will greatly improve safety in schools and places of worship? NO! The lead goal for the Prime Protection Foundation (PPF) in 2024 is to help the National Gun Violence Protection Association (NGVPA), a branch organization, to establish such National Standards, This will not be easy or inexpensive. PPF has set a goal of $87,000 to assist in funding a task force to be held in Washington, DC on November 14-15, 2024.
